I was born in Atlanta and never really considered living anywhere else. I did live in many areas of Atlanta including East Atlanta, Stone Mountain, Tucker, Chamblee, Marietta, Smyrna, Powder Springs, Lithonia, and Cumming. It wasn't until my daughter Katie graduated from high school did we decide to move to Hartwell, GA... the place of my mother's birth. My parents are now buried here as well as my Aunt Joyce who moved to Hartwell just after we did.
I plan to write some blog articles about my life, so I won't try to tackle it all right here. I will say that music has been an important part of my life. In grammar school, I started playing the trumpet in Charles Bradley's East Atlanta's Elementary Band. At one point, I hated practicing and wanted to quit. My parents had just bought me a new Selmer K-modified trumpet and wouldn't allow it. In high school, band began to be more fun. My parents bought me a Vincent Bach Stradivarius trumpet right before a band trip to Europe to tour for 22 days. We played twice on that "tour", but we visited 7 countries and 21 cities.
At some point, I thought that I wanted to be a professional musician, but unfortunately never had the talent. Not being sure about college, I ended up at Georgia State and majoring in music. My life got off track there while rebelling and ended up quitting after just a year.
It took a few years, but I finally returned to church, visiting First Baptist Atlanta with my dad. Even while my life was still a mess, when I heard the orchestra playing, I knew that I belonged there. As it ended up, I played in the orchestra for about 20 years. FBA is where I met Donna and we were married in the Chapel.in downtown Atlanta.
Donna and i have been married for almost 39 years now and have two grown children and three grandchildren.
...more to come.
